vs. Only two practices
after tryouts and the selection of this years team we were on our way to
Rutgers University to play Rutgers - New Brunswick (different from last years
Rutgers opponent from the Camden campus). While we marveled at the club
sports field that they had we also had to get down to work. Villanova in
its usually fashion answered early, scoring in the first few minutes on a goal
slid over from the right tapped by Katrine and then
hit in by Lisa for the final say. Spring 2006 William and Mary
Tournament The journey started
on Friday around 5 when we finally got on the road. Five and a half
hours, and a cool tunnel/bridge later we were at Allison's house for the
night. After watching a movie, sleeping for hours, and eating a
wonderfully supplied brunch (courtesy of Allison's amazing parents) we were on
our way for another hour of driving to get to William and Mary. Once at William and
Mary we faced our first opponents, No break, however,
was provided as we went straight into the next game against Clemson, who had
some insight into our team being that there was a family connection between
both teams. Right away the intensity in this game was highly beyond what
it was in the first game. Maybe it was because there was a personal stake
in it or maybe it was because we were warmed up from the first game. MaryEllen scored the first goal and Allison Mantz then gave it to Kacy Moran
to seal the deal for Nova winning an early called game of 2-0.
Unfortunately the reason that it was called early was because of a stick
hitting a Clemson player in the eye and the attention needed to be put on
that. She however was a very good sport and we're glad to report that
after 7 stitches she is doing much better. 50 minutes later
was our third game against our toughest opponent. William and Mary, who
had a small home crowd advantage with several fans who
made their presence known. The entire game was fought back and forth,
almost even, but the amount of possession time still leaned towards William and
Mary. Two minutes left the score was still 0-0 thanks to some really
amazing saves by our goalie Liz Chin. That however changed though when we
had advantage in the circle and Allison made a short pass from the side of the
circle to Kacy at the top who
slipped it past the defender to Katrine who was able
to finish it off. Two minutes later it was over and Nova had pulled off
yet another win. Five minutes later
started our final game, and it started off slow since we were tired after 3
games in four hours. Thank you to all of
the girls who stayed in the car for so long and put up with all the last minute
changes, and a special thank you to Allison's parents for being so hospitable
and letting us into their very lovely home. It was greatly appreciated
and we attribute much of our success to the sleep that we got as a result! Fall 2005 Villanova Versus
Although it took quite some time to get there, who knew the airport also meant
route 22 east? we finally made it to the fields only
to discover no bathrooms, no warm up time and GRASS! Everyone however
adjusted quickly and the game began. At first with Villanova adjusting to
the new playing field so the play was pretty even, no particular team dominating,
but once we got adjusted that all changed. Once Katie Harkins saw the
cross passed she connected near the stroke line and sent it straight into the
cage to put Villanova up to start. Next Courtney Parrett
took a shot and Katie was there to tap it in and ensure the 2 point lead for
Villanova. The close encounter with a goal however sent Courtney surging
on several breakaways as the team became better and better at passing through
the bunched Lafayette girls, and on one such opportunity Courtney went one on one
with the defender and then the goalie and managed to slide it by both to give
Villanova a comfortable 3-0 lead. The second rotation soon came in to
replace the first rotation and MaryEllen Macek showed some great aggression from the start,
dribbling up the left and cutting back for passes from the midfield. It
paid off shortly after when she slid another one past the goalie.
Although this was it for the scoring, the entire team really continued to
dominate
Next I want to extend a
thank you to all of the parents, siblings and friends who drove from all over
to support the team. Your support was well received and greatly
appreciated. Without fans to support us this season would not be
possible. Thank you also to all of the girls for getting up so early for
so long despite the fact that with so many and so few games the playing time
was not ideal for anyone. Thank you for maintaining teamwork and positive
attitudes the entire season. I look forward to seeing you next
year. Thank you finally to my family for supporting me in getting this
going, without you I could never have done it. Villanova versus
St. Joes
The first half started out pretty even, both teams had about equal possession
of the ball, which spent most of its time in the middle of the field. The
first Villanova rotation went for the first 15 minutes and managed to keep a
shutout and take a few shots to give St. Josephs a few good scares. The next
rotation came in and off a rebound, Kacy Moran from the top of the circle wound up and drove
the ball into the back right corner of the goal to give Villanova their first
lead of the season. Shortly after the ball was brought by Kacy up the left side of the field and sent to the center
on an inbounds pass. Katrine Herrick then did a reverse stick pass and the ball slid past the
goalie and again into the back right side of the goal. Moments later the
second half was over, and the Villanova Wildcats were up 2-0.
The second half started with the first rotation again and still the Wildcats
showed the dominance with the confidence from the now 2-0 margin. Still
there was no score come the middle of the second half when the second rotation
went in again. With about five minutes left in the game the ball was
pushed back on a rebound by Katrine Herrick to Katie
Harkins. She connected with the cross pass and hit it into the left side
of the goal for a birthday goal making the score 3-0. With only five
minutes left, and a bribe of no early practice the next day if we scored
another goal, the team was scrambling to get the final goal. With just
seconds left the bath found its way to Kacy off of a
goalie rebound, and she lifted into the top right corner just as the whistle
blew to end the game. Although the end of the game was called before the
goal was counted, the time difference was so insignificant that the team still
managed to get out of practice.
The team in itself played absolutely stellar. The
midfield including showed great communication skills and ball movement while
defense showed excellent clearing as well as ball handling skills.
It was an excellent game for everyone and as the whole the team came away with
a great victory and positive energy for the rest of the season. |
